Spam Mail FAQ
For anyone who uses email to communicate, spam is inevitable and, inevitably annoying. Dealing with spam-mail manually can take up a lot of productive time and it is nowadays essential to use email software that efficiently deals with spam and thus saves you time to get on with more important work. All the free software I have listed here will help to stem the continual flow of unwanted spam that we all receive in our inboxes. Good luck!
Below is a list of some of the best Free Anti Spam Mail Software
Spamato - Spamato is an extendable spam filter system written in Java. It exists in different flavors and runs on various platforms. Spamato is published on SourceForge as a GPL-licensed open source project! When Spamato detects a spam messages, it moves the message to a special 'junk mail' folder. Thus, you are able to review Spamato's decisions. Simply by clicking a button in your mail client, you can report undetected spam messages and/or revoke messages wrongly branded as spam. Additional graphical statistics explain the efficiency of every single filter as well as the overall effectiveness of the whole system. You can also adjust several settings and see why a particular message has been regarded spam or ham.
Opera - The Opera web browser is listed here because it has a powerful inbuilt mail program that is excellent at dealing with spam. Spam mail is filtered from all the mail that is received and placed in a database file giving you the opportunity to review and delete permanently the spam mail. The filter built into the Opera email client also learns from any mail you add to the filter, so it just gets better and better at dealing with spam mail.
K9 - K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with your regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming emails as spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for maintaining dozens of rules or constant updates to be downloaded. It uses intelligent statistical analysis that can result in extremely high accuracy over time. K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and better at being able to identify spam. More importantly it learns to recognize what you consider to be spam. K9 is for standard POP3 email accounts only. It does not directly support Hotmail, AOL or any other kind of webmail type systems, nor does it support SSL or secure authentication as used by MSN..
Popfile - POPFile automatically sorts your messages and fights spam. POPFile classifies email into categories you define. It can sort into spam and not spam or into any number of categories you like (e.g. work, personal, important project, hobby, etc.). The classification is done using a naïve Bayes algorithm. In other words, POPFile uses statistics to track which words are likely to appear in which messages. This means that POPFile will adapt to the kind of mail you receive and needs to be trained. Out of the box, it doesn't know anything about spam or how messages from your mother differ from those your friends send you. However, if you train it, it will soon learn how to tell these different kinds of messages apart. POPFile was created by John Graham-Cumming and is maintained as open source by a team of developers and users that file bug reports, post patches, and suggest enhancements.
SpamBayes - SpamBayes is a tool used to segregate unwanted mail (spam) from the mail you want (ham). Before SpamBayes can be your spam filter of choice you need to train it on representative samples of email you receive. After it's been trained, you use SpamBayes to classify new mail according to its spamminess and hamminess qualities. It's best to train on recent email, because your interests and the nature of what spam looks like change over time. When SpamBayes filters your email, it compares each unclassified message against the information it saved from training and makes a decision about whether it thinks the message qualifies as ham or spam, or if it's unsure about how to classify the message. It then adds its classification to the message, either by adding a header (X-Spambayes-Classification: spam|ham|unsure), modifying the To: or Subject: headers, or adding a "Spam" field to the message. Depending on which SpamBayes application you are using, it may then filter this message for you, or you can set up your own filters (to file away suspected spam into its own mail folder, for example).
Spam Terrier - Agnitum’s Spam Terrier is a powerful, self-learning spam filter that can be deployed and used with popular email clients to keep unwanted messages out of your inbox. It detects and quarantines most spam automatically, relieving you of the hassle of manually delete junk mail from your inbox. It saves time and frustration and keeps you safe, from potentially malicious content and unnecessary distractions. Spam Terrier gives you back your inbox at no cost — the software is free and uses minimal computer resources. It also takes very little time and effort to set up and maintain.
